Hashtags: 5 Ways to Use Them for YOUR Brand

Hashtags are the file folders of the internet. [Click to Tweet] They are used to collect and organize data based on a term or phrase.

What makes a hashtag?

Hashtags are a word or words that are together without any spaces. Capitalization, or lack thereof, doesn’t matter, that’s more or less personal preference because most hashtags will be grouped together as long as they contain the same words, in the same order.

How do I know if I’ve made a hashtag?

All hashtags are hyperlinks but not all hyperlinks are hashtags. Hyperlinks are links to an article or post that you want your audience to click on to get to something else. Ex: click here to sign up for FREE tips and more!

What hashtags should I use?

This depends on your marketing objectives. For starters, you should use hashtags to jump into conversations that you wouldn’t have been a part of. For Instagram, specifically, you can use up to 30 hashtags per photo post. I recommend 15-20 per post.

Should I create my own hashtags?

No. Truly, not until you’ve create a big enough following to have them catch on to content you create. When your objective is follower growth, it is best to use heavy hashtags and add hashtags that are not as popular to increase your odds of being in the Top Posts feed, but that’s Instagram only and comes with my more specific instructions in my #InstaGoalsPod Mastermind course.

How do I find hashtags?

The best way to search for hashtags is on Instagram or Twitter. Using the social media network’s search box will not only show you how many other posts are tagged with the tag you’re considering, but it will also give you an idea of what type of content is being tagged with that hashtag as well. This is the best way to determine if your content fits into the conversation.
